DESCRIPTION: This seminar will explore different methodologies employed by contemporary artists that expand the possibilities of research-based practice. Most contemporary artistic production is based on some kind of research, but when foregrounded, research can often endow the semblance of depth and rigor to projects which might otherwise meander between disciplinary categories. Research can frame an episteme, dispositif, apparatus, or an ensemble but praxis remains a practical activity that must face the techno-social conditions of our given era and provide it with forms. In our shared historical moment it is not adequate to simply resist or deny every bad object. Pleasure, intimacy and desire are deeply entangled with capital. What can art do inside and beyond these givens? How can artistic output be made relevant and actionable? An amassing of facts-based research is no guarantor of political leverage. An ascetic disposition will not hold the world at bay – particularly as the labyrinth of information is now the domain of the machines and algorithms. Moderated by João Enxuto, this seminar will feature artists who have recently made significant contributions by developing new artistic methodologies.
