DESCRIPTION: In this experimental Seminar, we explore a wide range of derangements through texts about mental and spatial practices, strongly influenced by re-consideration of the post-medieval mind and post-medieval spaces as reciprocating mechanisms. The figure of the cornucopia (horn of plenty) will recur axiomatically throughout the Seminar as the exceptional discursive figure of hyper-desire, excess, wild production exessive proliferation, as well as profusion and pleroma. Fundamentally, we will expand the potentialities of a recurring medieval derangement of thought in our late modernity (new “dark ages”) – traced through select cases of obscure philosophy with populist psychic-fiction films – all for delivering desiring-production of alien temporalities and alien forms of thought for consideration. These include some examples of how untethering the linear mind of reason in favor of the medieval and surreal divergences can be made possible.

Session 1-Medieval Surrealism:The framing of this cornucopia comes from scent-select writings on medieval surrealism (from the Burn After Reading manifesto), which initiates our ride through the horn of plenty of theory. We will include clarification of plenitude through Pleroma, Pleromatica, and the automatic cornucopia that gives rise to automata and surrealist automatism.

Session 2-Neuro-Gothic Subjectivity: We will map the complexities of Gnostics and Neo-Platonists, the Bifurcated Soul and the Bifurcated Novum, soul-vehicles and distributed psyche, Gothic metaphysics, and a select Cyber-Goth Carnivalesque arising from the modern dust of austerity; and the judgment machines of loving grace for Sawing brittle spaces.

Session 3-Subtle Monstrous Body: We explore the discourse/figure interference patterns inside the subtle monstrous body; how new flesh demands new senses (and a substrate of non-sense); on becoming-chimera as a multiplicity of the self (one into many); on propagating the homunculus (initiating infinite recursions of the self); all figures deranged through some of Bataille’s excess expenditure protocols.

Session 4-Ecstatic Minds: We expand the ecstatic minds of creative derangement to come to a wider spectrum when turning to alien thought – from spirit possession and schizo-speech (influencing-machines, thought insertion, thought broadcasting); to consciousness bristling with hallucinations; and lesser forms of time travel (déjà vu, premonition and clairvoyance, blackout and psychogenic fugue).

This Seminar will project theory into multiple kernels of creative derangement practices, crossing, reconnecting, and assembling what interests the Students and Researchers by rapidly flowing free-style impulses out of the cornucopia of post-medieval mentalities, from one to many.
